It’s Doctor’s Day, and while we should always celebrate the heroes who tirelessly work to save lives, today we pay homage to the countless sacrifices doctors make for us every single day. While the work they do often goes unnoticed, these films definitely reminded us of their blood, sweat and tears through these fantastic portrayals of doctors in cinema.
This was one of the few movies in Malayalam cinema that had portrayed psychiatrists in a good light. Usually, they were either cunning or rude and sometimes, they were meant for comic relief. But in Ulladakkam, Mohanlal’s Dr. Sunny is an empathetic, kind-hearted, pleasant and approachable doctor who manages a psychiatric asylum. The film revolves around him and one of the inmates named Reshma (Amala) and the tragedy that hits Sunny on her account.

Once again, it’s Mohanlal as Dr. Sunny, the witty and eccentric psychiatrist. This time, he helps Nakulan (Suresh Gopi) come to terms with his wife Ganga’s (Shobana) multiple personality disorder and prevent the danger that’s awaiting him. Dr. Sunny is an iconic doctor in the history of Malayalam cinema and there have been many movies that tried to mimic him with their characters.

Ayalum Njanum Thammil
This film stars Prithviraj Sukumaran as Dr. Ravi Tharakan, a renowned cardio surgeon working in a private hospital. When a girl dies during surgery, everyone goes against Tharakan, prompting the hospital chairman’s private secretary Diya (Rima Kallingal) to start an investigation and find out who Tharakan really is. A flashback shows his life as a medical practitioner and how he becomes an honest doctor. His story is heart-touching and the film is one of Prithviraj’s best.

Unlike the other films, this one does not have a heroic doctor. However, it is an honest representation of corruption in the medical industry. In the film, Dr. Vijay Nambiar (Suresh Gopi) falls for one of these corrupt practices of the private hospital he works in but tables turn and he becomes prey to it. How he undoes the wrong forms the crux of the film.

This was a fine artistical representation of a real-life incident when the Nipah virus hit Kerala. It showed how the Kerala Government, along with the medical staff in the state worked hand-in-hand to uproot the virus. Every doctor in the film – be it the one portrayed by Indrajith Sukumaran, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Kunchako Boban or Sreenath Bhasi – was a well-written character and beautifully represented.
