Slasher films of the last decade do not hold a torch to classic series like ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre‘, ‘Saw‘, ‘Scream‘, or ‘Halloween‘. In fact, it was during the ’80s and the ’90s that we got the best of this genre. ‘Fear Street Part One: 1994‘ tries to revive these classics by bringing us a movie set around this period. From insolent teens to murder-crazed serial killers, it’s got them all. The movie is set in the fictional town of Shadyside, also known as ‘the killer capital of the US’. It kicks off with a string of murders at the Shadyside mall, which sparks concern within the town. Conspiracy theorists are rife with rumours about the return of the “witch”, a woman from an old legend who was burned at stake for suspicions of being a witch and came back to haunt the town every few decades. A bunch of teenagers become her next target, when one of them accidentally sees her in the woods. They must now find a way to put an end to her curse or end up in her long list of victims.

New film, old tricks…but it works!

‘Fear Street Part One: 1994’ takes us back to the era when slasher films were fun. You would see a bunch of fairly incompetent people fight a psychopathic killer who would stop at nothing. And yet, they would succeed. Some of the narrow escapes were far too unbelievable and almost funny, giving rise to a new genre of spoof films. But we enjoyed them. ‘Fear Street’ does not do anything we haven’t seen before, except maybe make the protagonist and her love interest queer, but it still makes for an engaging watch. The story is intriguing and sets a solid premise for the sequels to follow.

Ignore the performances, enjoy the film

If you have never watched films in this genre, you should know that slasher movies are not watched for their performances. Nor do they follow a classic style of horror with jarring background music and triggering sound effects. In fact, the ‘Fear Street Part One: 1994’ has a fun collection of songs from the ’80s and ’90s that you can sing along to as you enjoy the film. You need to cherish each scene and be in the moment than focus on the story at large.

WATCH OR NOT:

If you are a fan of the classic slasher genre, you will definitely enjoy what ‘Fear Street Part One: 1994’ has to offer. If gore is not your scene, you could still make a drinking game out of this movie. It’s not too scary and makes for a perfect evening watch with friends.
